Optimizing Your Images

It's good practice to reduce the file size of your images before you upload them to your site. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. The greatest resolution that will show on a computer screen is 72dpi (dots per inch.) This means that the pictures that you've taken with your digital camera at 300dpi (a great print quality) should be reduced to 72dpi before you upload them to your site. This will ease the upload process and keep your site running quickly.
  2. The dimensions of a picture need not be any larger than the largest occurrence of the picture on your website. For instance, if you are going to put a logo on your home page at 400px by 300px, there is no sense uploading that picture with the dimensions of 1800px by 2400px. You should shrink the image prior to uploading it.
  3. There are some great tools available at www.irfanview.com and www.shrinkpictures.com that will help you resize your photo dimensions and resolution. These tools are free and serve as a simple way to reduce the resolution and dimensions of your photos quickly and easily before uploading them to your site.  You can also rezie and edit images for free with an account at https://www.photoshop.com/
